PREVENT and counter terrorism

Prevent is a national programme that aims to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

There are different types of terrorism which include:

  • international terrorism
  • Islamist ideology
  • right / neo-Nazi / white supremacist ideology,
  • Irish nationalists and loyalist paramilitary groups
  • extremist animal rights movement.

Prevent is run locally by settings including local authorities, the police, charities and community organisations.

Educators are often in a unique position, through interacting with learners on a regular basis, to be able to identify concerning behaviour changes that may indicate they are susceptible to radicalisation.

It is part of our safeguarding duties to look out for these signs and help make sure people get appropriate help and support.

We have a zero-tolerance approach to bullying, harassment, hate crime and discrimination and respect the different opinions, values, and experiences of our learners.

We aim to:

  • provide an inclusive and flexible curriculum which promotes equality and diversity, challenges extremist accounts and promotes universal rights
  • to encourage an inclusive and social cohesive service, with recognition for all faith and cultures and celebrate diversity
  • to promote British values and provide a forum for open and safe debate so learners have a voice
  • provide appropriate advice and support to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they receive the relevant external help
  • challenge the concept of terrorism, extremism and the threat faced from those who promote these views
  • ensure staff, volunteers and learners are aware of their roles and responsibilities with regards to counter terrorism
  • work in partnership with a range of agencies when there are risks of radicalisation including: police, local communities, health, schools, voluntary sector, charities and faith organisations
  • offer staff, volunteers and learners local and national updates to provide understanding of the issues and have the confidence to deal with them.
